The Nouakchott International School offers a supportive and safe environment where individualized style of learning meets the strengths and needs of your child.
Whether a student is looking for a couple courses to supplement their current schooling or enrolling with NIS full-time, every student has the support of teachers and Academic Coaches. Nearly all courses are complemented by specialized content and students have the opportunity to move at their own speed within their set term dates.
Full-time Primary School students take four core classes: language arts, math, science, and social studies – along with music, art, and world language options. Each of the core classes host weekly Class Connects where students and teachers can interact in a virtual classroom setting.
Lessons are followed by assessments, assuring that each child has mastered a skill before moving on. Online assessments are integrated with the planning and progress tools, making it easy to find the right pace and helping students stay on track.
The parent/Learning Coach works closely with his or her student to facilitate progress through the daily lessons. A Learning Coach for a full-time K – 8 student can expect to spend 1-4 hours a day helping the student. Each course provides suggested lesson plans for the week, which the Learning Coach can easily adjust. The teachers and coaches are there to help students with challenging topics and questions with specific course content.
Early Years Program: Pre - K - Grade 2
In our Early Years classroom students will be supported in a smaller group environment where our qualified Learning Coaches assist students in all four core subjects, English, Mathematics, Science and History. In addition to the support from their Learning Coach, our US certified online Teachers are also available to ensure that students will receive the necessary support to enrich their learning experience. Our Learning Coaches bring the online curriculum to life through interactive and fun activities, which will allow students to progress and succeed through our blended learning methodology. Students will have regular schedule with teachers for French, Arabic, Music, Art and P.E.

Lower School: Grade 3 – Grade 5
In our Lower School classroom students will benefit from a small group environment where our qualified Learning Coaches support students in all four core subjects, English, Mathematics, Science and History. In addition to the support from their Learning Coach, our US certified Teachers are also available to ensure that students will receive the required support to enhance their learning journey.
We recognize that at this stage in a child’s development, they have not yet acquired the skills to be fully independent and self-motivated learners. It is our goal to encourage our students to see education as an opportunity to take more control of their own learning. Our Learning Coaches bring the online to life through interactive and fun activities, which will allow students to grow and flourish through our mastery-based approach to learning and assessment. Students will have regular schedule with teachers for French, Arabic, Music, Art, and P.E.

Middle School: Grade 6 – Grade 8
In our Middle School classroom students will continue with all four core subjects, English, Mathematics, Science and History with the assistance of their Learning Coaches and Online Teachers. Students will have regular schedule with teachers for French, Arabic, Music, Art and P.E.
At this stage in student’s learning, they will have attained some basic skills required to become self-directed and independent learners. We provide a Learning Coach to work with students in a way that will scaffold their learning and understanding throughout grades 6 to 8. Students receive the necessary support to encourage them to develop a deeper level of understanding and the ability to create their own ideas. In order to do so, students will work independently on certain course areas, but also within group sessions where the Learning Coaches can provide greater detail and instruction, whilst encouraging group discussions where opinions and attitudes can be explored.
